7th GEO Plenary Session and 2010 Ministerial Summit

The Summit took place at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing (above). The event was attended by a POGO-Oceans United delegation, consisting of the Chairman of POGO Kiyoshi Suyehiro, members of the POGO Secretariat (Trevor Platt, Shubha Sathyendranath and Sophie Seeyave), Sun Song, Director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS, a member of POGO), Yin Hong, Head of the International Office of IOCAS, and Jesse Ausubel, Programme Director for the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and one of the founders of POGO.

In preparation for the Summit, a press release was issued that highlighted the importance of ocean observations for societal benefit and the urgent need to complete the ocean observing system. The press release was picked up by reporters around the world and, over 200 on-line articles and at least 15 printed articles were published in 30 countries and 6 languages. A press conference was also organised on-site, at which the press release (translated into Chinese), was distributed to the local press. Newswire stories were issued by Reuters (English, Spanish, Portuguese), Canadian Press (English and French), ClimateWire, Presse Text (German), EFE (Spanish) and ANSA (Italian).

A POGO-Oceans United stand was developed for the Exhibition, which took place alongside the Plenary Session and Ministerial Summit (see photo). The stand was visited by both scientists and members of the public, with an interest in oceans and particularly in the applications of remote sensing to ocean observation, ecosystem monitoring and fisheries management.

At the Ministerial Summit, the Member States and Participating Organisations, including POGO, were given the opportunity to make a 2-min statement. The Summit assessed GEO's progress over the past 5 years, evaluated past and future GEOSS implementation, agreed a Data Sharing Action Plan, and adopted the Beijing Declaration.
